Adoption

I'm currently reading "The Adoption Decision: 15 Things You Want to Know Before Adopting" by Laura Christianson, and it's got me thinking about adoption, specifically international adoption as more of a realistic possibility for us. I've been doing some online research and the process of adopting a child from China costs about 10-15 thousand dollars.

We're set to move again in approximately 2 years, at which point I will be finished with my Bachelors degree and hopefully working at my first real "career" job. Once at that job, I will start aggressively paying my school loans. I can conservatively estimate my future salary to be about 25,000 a year. If I put 1/2 of that toward my school loans, I can have them paid in roughly 3-4 years (I'm guesstimating because of interest). I'll divide the other half of my check into spending money and savings. Of course we'll continue to live on Heath's check almost exclusively, exactly like we do now. Keeping in mind the more I save, the faster I'll meet my child will be a great motivator! :) I figure that we can be financially prepared in a little over a year. That's assuming of course that we don't have any money saved before I start working, which hopefully we will.

As for Heath, the military offers 21 days of paid "adoption leave"--which, by the way is more than they offer if you give birth to a child, how crazy is that???--plus a 2000$ grant to help with expenses. So, that makes things a lot more possible, both financially and with timing.

***Note: I need to say that while an adoption can be costly, you're not paying for the child you're paying for the services. So please, don't ever ask someone how much their child "costed" them. They will be offended.***

To sum up, if all goes according to planned, we could have our second child in approximately 3-4 years. That means depending on the age of our child, she could be born in the next year or two--who knows, maybe she's out there somewhere right now! How exciting is that?!

So, if anyone out there is reading this, please be praying for my baby. I know God knows who she is and when she will come into this world, and when we will get to meet her. I know it's still at least 3 years before I can eve start the process it takes to call her my child, and chances are she doesn't even exist yet, but I can't help myself. :) Plus, I figure the more prayers she gets, the better.
